KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 9 (Bernama) -- The first day for Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) at the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Highway went smoothly without causing any traffic congestion.

ANIH Berhad chairman and chief executive officer, Datuk Dr Azmil Khalid this was mainly due to the cooperation of the highway users. "Today, we saw the implementation of 100 per cent cashless lanes at Gombak and Bentong toll plazas at the highway from noon.

"This is to encourage easy flow for road users without having to stop and make cash payments. No traffic congestion today, this was proven with the smooth flow of traffic and cooperation from the road users," he told reporters after launching the fully ETC system for the tolled highway here today.

ANIH Berhad is the concessionaire for the KL-Karak Highway as well as the East Coast Expressway. Other toll plazas which also implemented the ETC system today were the ones at Jitra (North-South Highway (PLUS)); Bukit Kayu Hitam (PLUS); Lunas (Butterworth-Kulim Expressway(BKE)); Kubang Semang (BKE) and on Penang Bridge (PLUS).

Also the Ampang-Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway (AKLEH) toll plaza; the Ayer Panas toll plaza on the Duta-Ulu Kelang Expressway (DUKE); the Sentul Pasar DUKE toll plaza; the Batu DUKE toll plaza; and the SMART Highway toll plaza.

Azmil said portable ETC readers will be used if there are problems with the ETC system. At present, more than 100,000 motorists use the KL-Karak Highway from Gombak to Bentong each day. The ETC entails payment via PLUSMiles and Touch'n Go cards, the SmartTAG device and enabled MyKad.
