BENTONG: Highway concessionaires should take the initiative to ensure that motorists have a comfortable journey when they return home during the current festive season, MCA Youth chief Datuk Liow Tiong Lai said.

Liow said it was their responsibility to remove any obstacles to a smooth journey.

“The concessionaires should conduct ample monitoring on the flow of traffic and if needed, make available small sections of the opposite lane for use,” he said.

Speaking at the MTD Prime Sdn Bhd Chinese New Year ceremony cum Road Safety Campaign here yesterday, Liow highlighted the importance of community participation in ensuring the campaign was a success.

He said despite general notions of such campaigns not making any difference, the situation would be worse without them.

“MCA Youth, for example, has taken up the Government’s challenge to participate in road safety campaigns by collaborating with members of the private sector.

“Through such initiatives, the death rate has steadily decreased,” Liow, who is also Bentong MP, said.

He said there were 8.7 deaths for every 10,000 vehicles in 1996, which went down to 3.9 deaths for every 10,000 vehicles last year.

Liow distributed safety campaign leaflets and goodie bags to motorists passing through the Bentong toll while advising them to be careful on the roads.

Earlier, Liow presented ang pow to the less fortunate at the Bentong Old Folks’ Home, West Pahang Special Welfare Association for Children and Ceria Special Welfare Association for Children.
