SAFETY: East Coast Expressway motorists will have smooth ride

BENTONG: ANTICIPATING a high volume of traffic during the Chinese New Year holidays, the East Coast Expressway (ECE) concession holders Anih Berhad has temporarily ceased road repairs until Feb 7.

Anih Berhad director Ir Wan Razali Wan Muda said repair works in the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway, which is part of the 234km stretch connecting Gombak (Selangor) and Jabor (Terengganu), had stopped since Jan 24 to allow smoother traffic flow.

'There will be an increase of up to 200,000 motorists daily during the festive season compared with the normal 140,000.

"Temporarily ceasing road repairs at several stretches will allow motorists a comfortable and safe journey."

He said this after launching its road safety campaign for the Chinese New Year at the Bentong Toll Plaza here yesterday.

To avoid long queues at toll plazas, he said Anih Berhad would assign some 350 collection staff and set up temporary toll booths.

Wan Razali said additional ECE patrol vehicles and personnel would be on standby around the clock to provide help and guidance to road users. He reminded motorists to plan their journeys and refer to the time-travel advisory issued by Anih Berhad to avoid peak periods or being caught in traffic jams. Wan Razali said the safety campaign was part of the company's corporate social responsibility to strengthen its ties with the community along the highway corridor.

Public Works Minister Datuk Fadillah Yusof said his ministry was looking into the best mechanism to build strong and durable projects capable of withstanding floods and landslides. He said projects damaged because of natural disasters would be repaired after they were examined.

"We will find ways and do research so that we can apply new technologies in repairing damaged roads, bridges or slopes, particularly due to floods."

He said this after launching the painting of the contractors' service centre in Taman Sepakat here yesterday.

Some RM56.9 million is needed to repair roads, bridges and slopes damaged during recent floods in Terengganu, Pahang and Johor.
